Tracking Finished Goods on the Floor and Managing Returnable Racks

Overview

Containers in FeneVision are physical racks or frames used to transport and track finished goods — both on the production floor and during delivery to customers. Two types exist: Harp Racks (vertical slot-based) and Stacked Racks (A-Frame or L-Frame). Containers can be flagged for production use, shipping use, or both, and their location and status are tracked throughout the lifecycle.

 

How It Works

Containers are defined in Setup >> Containers. Each container belongs to a Container Definition and is assigned a type (Harp or Stacked), a prefix, and usage flags (Production, Shipping). When shipped to a customer, the container status changes to Shipped. After 7 days it automatically becomes Ready for Pickup. (the number of days can be adjusted, ask Support if needed) When returned, it reverts to Returned status. Barcodes can be printed for scanning in FeneVision Tracking.

 

Step by Step

  • Set up a container: Go to Setup >> Containers. Right click and select Add Definition, name it, then select Add >> Add Container to Definition and fill in details.
  • Print barcodes: Highlight the container in the setup screen, then select Container Barcodes from the print/preview drop-down.
  • Ship a container: In Setup >> Containers, select a container with status Released, choose the customer from the drop-down, and select Submit — status changes to Shipped. Containers can also be shipped using the Trucking application.
  • Return a container: Select a container with status Shipped, choose the manufacturing location, and select Submit — status changes to Returned.
  • Delete a container: Select the container in Setup >> Containers and select Delete.

 

Key Rules / Things to Know

  • Shipping containers shipped more than 7 days ago automatically change to Ready for Pickup status.
  • Harp Racks use slot-based stacking; Stacked Racks use A-Frame or L-Frame configurations.
  • A single Container Definition can be configured for both Work Route and Opti-Pack — they are not mutually exclusive.
  • The Allow New flag lets Tracking users create containers on-the-fly for a definition.

 

Tips

  • Use the Find button in Setup >> Containers to filter containers by status (Shipped, Returned, Pickup) to quickly locate outstanding racks at customer sites.
  • Print and attach barcodes to physical racks at setup time — scanning in Tracking is far more accurate than manual entry.
  • Review the Container Inventory report periodically to identify racks that have been at customer sites longer than expected.
