Dynamic Parts
Letting Option Selections Automatically Generate a Part Number
Product: FeneVision CORE Module: Order Entry / Products Setup Audience: Order Entry Users, System Administrators
Overview
Dynamic Parts are part numbers that are automatically built from the product options selected during Order Entry. Instead of maintaining hundreds of individual part numbers for every colour, size, or material combination, you define a single template with option placeholders—FeneVision fills them in at the time of ordering. This simplifies BOM configuration and reduces part number maintenance overhead.
How It Works
A Dynamic Part contains one or more Option Group tags embedded in the part number. Tags use angle brackets for option code groups (e.g. <COLOR>) or curly braces for option code values (e.g. {COLOR}). During BOM evaluation in Order Entry, each tag is replaced by the option code (or its key, if a key is defined) selected for that option group. For example, a part template of '701–<COLOR>' with option 'White' selected (code: W) would resolve to '701–W'. If the option code has a key defined in Options setup, the key is used instead of the code.
Step by Step — Creating a Dynamic Part
- Step 1: Go to Products >> Parts setup and create a new part.
- Step 2: In the Part Number field, type the desired template including Option Group tag(s) in angle brackets (e.g. 701–<COLOR>) or curly braces.
- Step 3: If the tag is entered correctly, the part number field turns red—this is expected and confirms the tag is recognised.
- Step 4: Complete the remaining part setup fields and save.
- Step 5: Assign the dynamic part to the appropriate BOM or product configuration.
- Step 6: During Order Entry, when an option is selected, FeneVision automatically resolves the tag to build the final part number.
Key Rules / Things to Know
- Dynamic Part numbers turn red in the Part Number field when tags are entered correctly—this is a visual confirmation, not an error.
- If an option code has a key assigned in Options setup, the key is used (not the code) when building the dynamic part number.
- Multiple Option Group tags can be combined in a single part number (e.g. 701–<COLOR>–<TYPE>–<PARTTYPE>).
- Dynamic parts are supported in interface and report setup screens—tags are substituted there as well.
- Dynamic Parts simplify BOM maintenance by eliminating the need for a unique part number for every option combination.
Tips
- Document your tag conventions: Keep a reference list of which Option Group codes are used as tags so administrators can maintain them consistently.
- Use keys for cleaner part numbers: Define short, meaningful keys for option codes (e.g. 'W' for White) to keep generated part numbers concise.
- Test before deploying: Enter a test order with each option combination to verify the dynamic part resolves to the correct part number before going live.
